Craig Hanson leads World Resource Institute’s work to reduce ecosystem degradation by advancing ecosystem service-based strategies, policies, and markets.  He also works with the private sector to identify and respond to risks and opportunities arising from ecosystem degradation.  Prior to becoming deputy director of the People and Ecosystems Program, Craig managed the Green Power Market Development Group-US and launched the Green Power Market Development Group-Europe -- unique partnerships between WRI and commercial and industrial firms dedicated to building corporate markets for green power.  Prior to joining WRI, he was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company for five years.

Craig earned an MSc in Environmental Change & Management from Oxford University where he also earned an MA in Philosophy, Politics, & Economics with an emphasis on environmental economics as a Rhodes Scholar. He has a BA from Georgetown University.

Among the many projects on which he has worked are the following:

  • Corporate Ecosystem Services Review. To stimulate and support business action to reverse ecosystem degradation through the development and adoption of an enterprise-level decision-support tool for identifying business risks and opportunities posed by the degradation of ecosystem services.
  • Green Power Market Development Group (GPMDG). The GPMDG is a unique commercial and industrial partnership dedicated to building corporate markets for green power. The Group is advancing a clean energy future by developing 1,000 megawatts of cost-competitive green power by 2010.
  • Green Fees. The Green Fees initiative is identifying and analyzing a portfolio of tax reforms that would be both fiscally prudent and environmentally sound. WRI is educating policymakers and opinion leaders in order to build support for these measures.
