Dr. Lars Laestadius conducts research in forest policy as a part of World Reesources Institute’s Frontier Forests Initiative, and is project manager for Global Forest Watch Russia. Prior to his current position, Dr. Laestadius served in the European Commission (DG XII), and was responsible for coordinating nationally funded European forestry and forest products research.
Dr. Laestadius holds a forest degree from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and a Ph.D. in Forestry from Virginia Tech. In addition to Swedish, Dr. Laestadius is fluent in English and conversant in Russian.
Global Forest Watch seeks to catalyze changes in forest use to meet human needs and better protect forest ecosystems. Its work can be accessed at globalforestwatch.org. The program works closely with corporations and international organizations to establish protocols for assured access of certified forest products, and uses geospatial information to track illegal access to protected forest lands.
